Foam vs. Spring Mattress
Still, the two most popular types of mattress are foam (whether memory foam, latex-based foam, or a proprietary foam), and innerspring mattresses that rely on coils to provide support. While you may know that these two types of mattresses are different, do you actually know what makes them different? Here are 3 key differences between the two.
Spring mattresses were first developed way back in the nineteenth century, and in all earnest, the idea behind them today isn’t much different. Springs are distributed throughout the bed to provide support for your body throughout the surface of the mattress. Since metal springs aren’t exactly comfortable, they cover them with cushioning. Foams were first used in mattresses when memory foam, which was actually first produced for NASA, was found to be suitable for consumer goods. Over time, that technology has developed into other types of foams, from nature-based products, to scientifically engineered foams, each with their own pros and cons.
Mattresses made with springs generally have good ventilation in them because of the space between the springs, and the breathable cushioning they put around them. One of the knocks on foam has been that it makes you sleep hot at night, because it’s not well-ventilated. While that may have been true about the first foam mattresses decades ago, today’s foam beds have been designed to have a more open-cell structure. while others like our own 8″ mattress, are infused with gel to keep you even cooler.
A bed supported by springs transfers motion very well. If you sit on one end, it’ll have a ripple effect on the rest of the mattress. This is good for jumping on, but not much else. A foam mattress contains movement, meaning there will be virtually no change in other parts of the mattress. This has been shown before in the famous red wine glass trick, where someone can jump on one end, and the glass of wine doesn’t budge on the other. This is good because if you share a bed with someone, you’ll be lest likely to disrupt them with your movement.
